Chief Audit Executive – Lead Internal Audit

About the role

The Chief Audit Executive will provide overall leadership and direction for the strategic implementation of a risk‑based internal audit programme, adding value and supporting Johannesburg Water in achieving its objectives. Reporting to the Audit and Risk Committee, the role ensures robust governance, risk management and internal controls across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the Internal Audit Strategic Plan, three‑year rolling risk‑based plan and annual audit plan.
• Execute audit assignments, report findings to management and the Audit and Risk Committee, and monitor the status of risk management, governance and internal controls.
• Lead the Audit department, fostering continuous improvement and coordinating with external auditors and City of Johannesburg risk services.
• Develop and maintain the combined assurance framework, internal control framework and internal audit charter.
• Conduct investigations, report findings, and ensure compliance with Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) standards and the Code of Ethics.
• Manage the audit budget and implement the Quality Assurance Improvement Program (QAIP).

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (NQF 7) in Internal Audit or Finance.
• At least 10 years of internal audit experience, with a minimum of 5 years at senior management level.
• Experience at a strategic level in the public sector is an advantage.
• Certification meeting National Treasury competency requirements for senior managers (or eligibility within 18 months).
• Certified Internal Auditor accreditation and membership of the Institute of Internal Auditors.
• Valid driver’s licence.
