Senior Legal Counsel – Regulatory

About the role

The Senior Legal Counsel – Regulatory provides strategic legal advisory and transactional support to the Corporate & Investment Banking division, ensuring regulatory and legal risk is proactively managed while enabling complex domestic and cross‑border financial transactions.

Key responsibilities

• Provide end‑to‑end legal counsel on CIB products, including investment banking, syndicated lending, project finance, capital markets, trade finance, cash management and derivatives.
• Negotiate, review and draft a wide range of agreements and transaction documentation.
• Translate legal and regulatory implications into actionable business insights and risk‑mitigation strategies.
• Serve as a regulatory risk filter for product innovation, deal reviews and transaction approvals.
• Monitor, interpret and advise on South African legal frameworks such as the Banks Act, Financial Markets Act, Companies Act, FICA, POPIA, FSCA and SARB directives.
• Influence internal compliance frameworks and support regulatory audits, inspections and multi‑jurisdictional transactions.
• Identify, assess and mitigate regulatory risks, participating in CIB risk and governance forums.
• Maintain and standardise legal templates, policies and procedures, and provide training to business and operations teams.

Required profile

• Senior‑level legal professional with extensive experience in corporate and investment banking.
• Deep knowledge of South African banking and financial market regulations.
• Proven ability to provide strategic legal advice and influence risk‑based decision making.
• Strong analytical and communication skills to translate complex regulatory requirements into business actions.
