Group Head of Combined Assurance

About the role

The Group Head of Combined Assurance will lead the design, implementation and ongoing management of an integrated assurance programme for a major African banking group. This senior position reports to the Head of Governance, Risk and Control and works closely with the Group Chief Risk Officer, the Executive Committee and the Board.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement a comprehensive, risk‑based combined assurance strategy aligned with the bank’s risk appetite and objectives.
• Develop the Combined Assurance Policy supporting the Group’s Enterprise Risk Management Framework.
• Lead agenda setting for the Group Combined Assurance Oversight Committee.
• Develop and embed assurance methodology and quality standards across risk functions.
• Provide oversight of internal audit, compliance, risk management and first‑line risk and control teams to ensure alignment with the combined assurance strategy.
• Liaise with external auditors and regulatory supervisors to integrate their activities into the assurance planning cycle.
• Ensure the programme can identify emerging risks and adapt to changes in the internal and external environment.
• Promote a culture of risk awareness and assurance excellence throughout the organisation.
• Monitor, report and recommend improvements on the effectiveness of the combined assurance programme to senior leadership and the Board.
• Act as escalation point for interpretation of combined assurance policies and standards.

Required profile

• Extensive senior‑level experience in combined assurance, internal audit, compliance or risk management within a banking or financial services environment.
• Proven ability to lead cross‑functional assurance teams and interact with executive committees and board members.
• Deep understanding of governance, risk management and regulatory frameworks applicable to large financial institutions.
• Strong strategic thinking and communication skills to influence and report to senior stakeholders.
