Apprentice Driver / Operator / Maintainer

About the role

We are looking for an Apprentice Driver/Operator/Maintainer to join Harsco Rail’s railway track maintenance team across East Anglia, North London and Derby. You will be trained to safely drive, operate and maintain our Over‑The‑Top Machines (OTMs) and related equipment while supporting our commitment to safety and reliability.

Key responsibilities

• Drive, operate and maintain OTMs in accordance with health, safety and quality standards.
• Perform grinder maintenance, repairs and fault finding to maximise machine availability.
• Follow the agreed roster, maintain route cards and learn new routes as directed.
• Document machine condition, manage tooling, spare parts, consumables and waste disposal.
• Ensure compliance with company policies, including PPE and environmental procedures.
• Use provided IT systems (Rule Book, FAMS, Q‑Pulse, AARK) to record activities and generate reports.
• Communicate regularly with the Control Centre and internal departments.

Required profile

• Fully qualified Driver Operator Maintainer with track safety qualifications (PTS and/or DP).
• Knowledge of drivers’ rules and health & safety requirements for the role.
• Team player with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.
• Proactive, process‑driven and committed to Harsco values of integrity, ethics and continuous improvement.

Required skills

• IT proficiency: Outlook, Excel, Word, Q‑Pulse and AARK systems.
• Practical knowledge of machine operation and route navigation.
