Superintendent Environmental Engineering

About the role

The Superintendent Environmental Engineering will lead the ventilation and occupational hygiene programmes within a mining operation, ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation while driving continuous improvement of environmental systems.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Environmental Engineering department in achieving its strategic objectives and business plans.
• Maintain and optimise ventilation and occupational hygiene strategies, standards and procedures.
• Provide technical solutions for ventilation, refrigeration and occupational hygiene issues identified through trend analysis.
• Set and monitor daily, weekly and monthly targets for ventilation and hygiene performance.
• Conduct compliance measurements and occupational hygiene assessments in line with the Mine Health and Safety Act (Sections 11 and 12).
• Develop, update and review statutory ventilation, mine rescue and emergency preparedness plans.
• Assist in the implementation of fire prevention and emergency response programmes.

Required profile

• Grade 12 with Physical Science and Mathematics.
• Certificate in MEC or SAIOH registration as an Occupational Hygienist, plus Intermediate MEC certificate.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in a senior mining health and safety role (C‑Upper level).
• Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating management systems and databases.
• Sound knowledge of people management and specialist ventilation/refrigeration simulation tools.
• Medically fit, clear security record and a valid driver’s licence.
• Advantageous: Level 7 qualification (Bachelor’s degree or advanced diplomas).
