Senior Director, Public Affairs, Communications & Sustainability

About the role

The Senior Director, Public Affairs, Communications & Sustainability (PACS) leads South Africa’s strategy across government affairs, communications, sustainability and stakeholder engagement. Reporting to senior leadership, this role safeguards the company’s licence to operate, builds reputation and drives long‑term growth.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute public policy strategies aligned with business priorities, engaging government, regulators and industry bodies.
• Lead integrated communications, overseeing internal, external and executive messaging, media relations, brand PR and digital channels.
• Chair crisis management, drive scenario planning, and ensure rapid, compliant communication during incidents.
• Define and implement sustainability programmes covering water, circular economy, climate and community impact, and manage related reporting.
• Build and maintain relationships with NGOs, communities, media and industry stakeholders, mapping influence and delivering shared‑value partnerships.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in public affairs, communications or sustainability within a highly regulated environment.
• Strategic advisor capable of influencing policy outcomes and shaping corporate reputation.
• Strong stakeholder management skills with a track record of coalition building.
• Ability to lead cross‑functional teams and external agencies.
