Senior Database Security Engineer

About the role

The Senior Database Security Engineer will evaluate information‑security tasks within Nedbank’s policies and standards, working autonomously and guiding junior staff. The role collaborates with experts to analyse, operate, and improve security processes while ensuring reliability and uptime of critical database environments.

Key responsibilities

• Establish and perform regular health assessments using vulnerability scanning and asset discovery tools, fixing non‑functional connections in Tenable IO.
• Investigate and remediate database vulnerabilities until fully resolved.
• Monitor alerts from the database activity monitoring system and follow up on incidents.
• Oversee CIS benchmark compliance for databases and support audit activities.
• Hold monthly meetings with database and application support teams to track and resolve non‑compliant vulnerabilities.
• Create and maintain technical documentation for monitoring processes, environment configurations and security standards.

Required profile

• Matric / Grade 12 or higher qualification (Diploma, Advanced Diploma or degree) with relevant information‑security certifications (A+, N+, S+ or equivalent).
• Demonstrated experience in the financial services sector, preferably banking, with a strong background in database administration, security and compliance monitoring.

Required skills

• Proficiency with SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
• Experience on AWS (Oracle & PostgreSQL) and Azure (SQL Managed Instances & PostgreSQL).
• Knowledge of Windows, Linux, AIX and Solaris operating systems.
• Familiarity with VMware and Nutanix virtualization platforms.
• Hands‑on experience with database encryption, authentication and access‑control mechanisms.
• Use of vulnerability scanning tools such as Tenable IO and enterprise PAM solutions.
