Director-General, Military Veterans (Level 16) – 5-Year Contract

About the role

The Department of Military Veterans is seeking a senior executive to serve as Director-General. This five‑year contract role will lead the department’s strategic direction and oversee the delivery of services to South Africa’s military veterans.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the Accounting Officer, providing strategic guidance and leadership across all departmental functions including communication, financial management, internal audit, risk control and corporate support.
• Develop, implement and monitor policies and procedures that ensure holistic socio‑economic support for military veterans.
• Interpret political direction, align departmental plans with government mandates and ensure transparent, accountable service delivery.
• Manage stakeholder relations, including liaison with parliament, elected officials and external partners.
• Oversee budgeting, asset management, internal audit, risk and compliance, and ensure proper delegation of authority.

Required profile

• Senior Certificate, an undergraduate qualification (NQF Level 7) and a postgraduate qualification (NQF Level 8) in Public Administration, Public Management or a related field recognised by SAQA.
• Eight to ten years of senior managerial experience, with at least three years in a State organ.
• Demonstrated executive management experience, strong leadership capabilities and knowledge of strategic leadership, government policies and business ethics.
• Personal attributes such as integrity, confidentiality, fairness, credibility, commitment and compassion.
