Deputy Director-General – Military Veterans Socio-Economic Support

About the role

The Department of Military Veterans seeks a senior leader to head the socio‑economic support services for military veterans. Reporting to the Director‑General, the Deputy Director‑General will be accountable for the strategic direction, policy development and delivery of benefits to veterans across South Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Assume ultimate responsibility for all military veterans socio‑economic support services.
• Oversee development, management and maintenance of the national military veterans database, including registration and deregistration processes.
• Lead the design, implementation and monitoring of beneficiary support strategies, policies and programmes.
• Ensure compliance with legislative and policy frameworks governing veterans benefits and public finance management.
• Direct the provision of health‑care, compensation and welfare services, and manage collaborations with government and private partners.
• Manage complaints, investigations, dispute resolution and continuous improvement of service delivery.

Required profile

• Senior Certificate or Matric plus an undergraduate degree (NQF Level 7) and a postgraduate qualification (NQF Level 8) in Public Administration, Public Management or related field, recognised by SAQA.
• Certificate for entry into the Senior Management Service.
• Eight to ten years senior managerial experience, with at least five years within the Senior Management Service in the public sector.
• Proven strategic leadership, financial management (PFMA) and change‑management experience.
• In‑depth knowledge of the legislative framework for military veterans and public administration.

• Annual all‑inclusive remuneration package of R1,521,591 (Level 15) comprising basic salary, pension contribution and flexible components.
• Permanent appointment with a twelve‑month probation period and performance agreement.
