Customer Account Associate – Billing Services (Civil Service Exam)

About the role

The Customer Account Associate – Billing Services role supports accurate billing operations for utility customers. This position is part of a civil service examination process, leading to placement on an eligible list for future openings within the City of Cleveland.

Key responsibilities

• Perform daily meter reading and resolve billing exceptions that prevent timely bill generation.
• Investigate and correct meter reading anomalies, including field investigations when needed.
• Calculate adjustments for leaks, homestead, and other billing-related issues according to policy.
• Prepare and distribute billing-related correspondence such as underground leak adjustment letters.
• Process program requests and assist with data adjustments to ensure billing accuracy.
• Provide temporary call‑center support during peak periods or special projects.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED; associate degree in Accounting, Business, or related field preferred.
• At least two years of full‑time experience in accounting or a billing environment, including account review, adjustments, and auditing.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
