Phaco Development Specialist – Cape Town

About the role

Alcon is seeking a Phaco Development Specialist to support ophthalmic surgeons and hospital staff in transitioning from Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) and Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE) to Phacoemulsification. You will deliver training, technical support, and program coordination across South Africa and the wider African region.

Key responsibilities

• Provide operating‑room, clinic, hospital and wet‑lab training to enhance surgeons’ Phaco techniques and outcomes.
• Identify and select candidates for the Phaco Development Program through structured self‑assessments.
• Act as a clinical and technical consultant, ensuring correct use of Alcon ophthalmic devices.
• Collaborate with external consultants, course instructors and proctors to drive skill development.
• Assist in delivering Alcon Phaco Development courses, congresses, symposiums and special events.
• Maintain compliance documentation, pre‑course assessments, surgical observations and post‑course performance tracking.
• Report adverse events and product complaints locally, escalating to the Local Vigilance Representative.

Required profile

• Background as a Surgical/Medical Technologist, Biomedical Engineer, Ophthalmic Assistant or Optometrist (preferred).
• Minimum 5 years of experience in Clinical Application, Marketing, Sales or related roles within a reputable medical‑device company, preferably in ophthalmology/optometry.
• Fluent English communication skills.
• Strong self‑motivation, teamwork, problem‑solving and ability to work under pressure.
• Valid driver’s licence, passport and willingness to travel up to 40 % of the time across Africa and South Africa.
