Indirect Tax Accountant – Customs & VAT Specialist

About the role

The Indirect Tax Accountant will support the Indirect Tax Lead in ensuring full compliance with South African and Botswana customs, excise and VAT legislation. You will work closely with finance, logistics and operational teams to manage tax risks, prepare statutory returns and maintain accurate tax records.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and submit Customs & Excise returns, VAT returns and other levy accounts on time.
• Reconcile Excise, Customs duty, VAT and levy accounts and investigate discrepancies.
• Monitor and interpret customs, excise and VAT legislation, tariff codes and regulatory updates for oil and petroleum products.
• Advise business units on tax implications of import, export and movement of fuel, lubricants and controlled substances.
• Manage relationships and audits with SARS and other regulatory authorities, including query response and documentation.
• Support month‑end, quarter‑end and year‑end closing with accruals and provisions for indirect taxes.
• Collaborate with EVCO, Logistics and Finance to ensure compliant warehousing and bonded storage.
• Maintain tax documentation and compliance evidence in line with audit standards.
• Assist external advisors on technical tax issues and contribute to process‑improvement and ERP enhancement projects.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance or related field (Honours advantageous).
• 2–3 years of experience in indirect tax accounting, preferably in petroleum, oil & gas or manufacturing.
• Experience interacting with SARS and handling tax audits.
• Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.

Required skills

• Proficiency with ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle.
