Deli Department Manager

About the role

The Deli Department Manager will lead the deli team to deliver exceptional customer experiences, maintain high product quality, and meet sales and profitability targets. This role requires a hands‑on leader who ensures compliance with food safety standards while driving operational excellence.

Key responsibilities

• Provide visible, customer‑focused service on the shop floor and ensure counters are fully staffed.
• Handle customer complaints, queries and special requests professionally.
• Achieve departmental sales, gross profit and margin goals; monitor daily performance and take corrective action.
• Control shrinkage, waste and markdowns; analyse sales trends to identify growth opportunities.
• Maintain hygiene, presentation, merchandising standards and enforce HACCP and health‑and‑safety regulations.
• Oversee product rotation (FIFO), stock ordering, receiving, inventory levels and accurate pricing.
• Conduct regular quality checks, temperature monitoring and equipment maintenance.
• Lead, coach and develop deli staff, manage performance, schedule staffing according to trading patterns and foster a high‑performance team culture.
• Manage departmental budgets, labour costs and complete required reporting.

Required profile

• Grade 12 (Matric) – essential.
• Relevant food, retail or culinary qualification – advantageous.
• 3‑5 years retail experience in fresh foods or deli.
• Minimum 2 years supervisory or management experience.
• Strong knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards.
