Special Risks Designer – Fire Protection Specialist

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Special Risks Designer to join our dynamic team in Johannesburg. The role focuses on fire protection design for special‑risk systems, delivering high‑quality, compliant drawings and calculations across a range of projects.

Key responsibilities

• Create Issued‑for‑Construction drawings and redesigns as required.
• Draft fire design drawings, piping layouts, and fire sprinkler/suppression systems in line with NFPA and ASIB standards.
• Develop As‑Built (red‑line) drawings and produce working drawings.
• Perform hydraulic calculations, material, dimensional and weight limitation calculations.
• Prepare cutting lists, layouts, and bills of materials.
• Coordinate with structural, electrical, and mechanical design teams.
• Communicate with engineers, site managers, and installation teams to resolve design flaws.
• Conduct site visits when needed and ensure all designs comply with engineering and manufacturing regulations.

Required profile

• Proven experience in fire protection design, especially special‑risk systems.
• Familiarity with NFPA and ASIB standards.
• Ability to produce detailed construction drawings and perform hydraulic calculations.
• Strong coordination skills with multidisciplinary design teams.
• Willingness to conduct site visits and address design issues on‑site.

Required skills

• Fire sprinkler and suppression system drafting.
• Hydraulic calculation software.
• Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Knowledge of NFPA standards.
• Knowledge of ASIB standards (advantageous).
