Legal Advisor – Renewable Energy Projects

About the role

Under the supervision of the Legal Manager, TotalEnergies Renewables is seeking a Legal Advisor to support its growing portfolio of large‑scale renewable energy projects across South Africa. You will work closely with business development, project development, construction and asset management teams to ensure legal compliance and mitigate risks.

Key responsibilities

• Identify legal risks, provide timely advice and propose practical solutions.
• Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of agreements, including confidentiality agreements, letters of intent, memoranda of understanding, term sheets, partnership agreements, joint development agreements, shareholders agreements, EPC contracts, O&M agreements, land agreements, asset purchase and sale agreements, share purchase agreements and project finance documents.
• Support business development in preparing tender documentation and manage legal aspects of awarded projects.
• Analyze new regulations affecting the renewable energy sector in South Africa and ensure compliance.
• Coordinate workstreams with local external law firms in line with TotalEnergies policies.
• Conduct contractual and legal due diligence related to claims and litigation.
• Maintain contractual and legal databases, provide company secretarial support and contribute to training materials.

Required profile

• LLB or BCom Law degree with additional business studies.
• 5‑6 years of experience in private practice or in‑house legal advisory, preferably within South African IPP power and renewable projects.
• Experience in a commercial or finance function of a multinational company is a plus.
• Strong organisational skills, ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines, and excellent interpersonal abilities.
