Trainee Technician – Central Decontamination Unit (Band 2)

About the role

This permanent, full‑time position supports the Central Decontamination Unit (CDU) at Cowlairs, providing decontamination, assembly, packaging and sterilisation of reusable medical devices for theatres, clinics and community services across the Glasgow Health Board area.

Key responsibilities

• Decontaminate and clean reusable medical instruments.
• Assemble instrument sets, ensuring all required components are included.
• Package and check devices in preparation for sterilisation.
• Operate sterilisation equipment safely and accurately.
• Rotate through all CDU zones to become a multi‑skilled workforce.
• Support the reprocessing of approximately 12 million instruments per year.

Required profile

• Essential knowledge of decontamination processes; prior experience is advantageous.
• Good general education with literacy, numeracy and manual dexterity.
• Willingness to undertake full training in decontamination, assembly, checking, packaging and sterilisation.
