About the role
The Primate Unit & Delft Animal Centre (PUDAC) at the South African Medical Research Council is looking for a highly self‑motivated Senior Research Technician. The role provides technical support for pre‑clinical and vaccine development studies, ensuring compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) under biosafety level 2 conditions.
Key responsibilities
- Perform sanitation of laboratories, auxiliary areas, equipment and glassware using appropriate techniques and protective clothing.
- Manage removal and segregation of chemical and biological waste, and replenish cleaning and hygiene supplies.
- Operate BSL‑1 and BSL‑2 equipment, including cryogenic freezers and gas cylinders, while monitoring laboratory conditions such as temperature and humidity.
- Assist with animal preparation rooms, sample labeling, and laboratory preparations for inspections, audits or special activities.
- Maintain records for monthly sterilisation tests, equipment verification, and GLP service and maintenance requirements.
Required profile
- Matric (Grade 12) with Mathematics and Life Science.
- At least 2 years of experience in a laboratory or research environment.
- Basic understanding of cleaning methods, hygiene practices, cross‑contamination principles and waste segregation.
- Ability to work effectively within a team and undergo health assessments including TB testing.
- Computer literacy and basic knowledge of quality control and SOP adherence.
Required skills
- Operation of BSL‑1 and BSL‑2 equipment.

- GLP record‑keeping and maintenance documentation.
- Sanitation techniques and waste segregation procedures.
