Senior Full Stack Software Engineer (Remote)

About the role

An early-stage, AI-native German start-up building the digital infrastructure for grant funding is hiring its first engineering hire: a Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack). The platform combines AI-supported research, matching and application drafting with expert review, so that non-profits and public organisations can focus on their projects. The role is full-time (40 hours per week) and remote, and you will work directly with the founders and the grant-writing team, with no designers or product managers in between.

Key responsibilities

• Own features end-to-end, from discovery with the grant team through to production, including the user interface
• Turn ambiguous business problems into clear technical plans, ship a first version quickly and then iterate
• Advance the AI pipeline through prompt engineering, context management, cost control and a multi-provider setup (AWS Bedrock, Anthropic, OpenAI)
• Build and own the AI evaluation practice: prompt quality, model selection and regression detection
• Operate, monitor and debug the live production environment (Sentry, CloudWatch, Postgres performance)
• Make architecture decisions, shape code quality, engineering standards and the technical roadmap
• Build interfaces with a usability-first mindset and shorten the time from starting a project to a finished, submitted application

Required profile

• 2+ years in a senior engineering role, with a track record of owning products or major features end-to-end
• Start-up or scale-up experience: taking an unclear business problem with no real spec and shipping a working solution quickly
• Several years of professional experience with TypeScript and Node.js, plus solid Postgres depth (JSONB, query performance, migrations)
• Confident across the full stack: Next.js / React Query on the frontend, Express and BullMQ on the backend, AWS (ECS, RDS)
• Hands-on experience building and running AI pipelines in production, beyond simply calling an API
• AI-native way of working: tools such as Claude Code or Cursor are part of your daily workflow
• Clear written and spoken English; able to explain a technical trade-off to a non-technical founder
• High ownership: closes problems yourself, brings proposals rather than diagnoses, works well without detailed direction
• Nice to have: German at B1 level or above, experience with AI agents and tool-calling workflows, and experience with Terraform
