About the role
The University of the Free State seeks a senior academic leader to head the Research Theme "Systems for Societal Development". This five‑year contract position will shape interdisciplinary research that addresses sustainable development, social innovation and systemic transformation.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement a strategic research agenda aligned with the university’s Vision 130, national priorities and the UN SDGs.
- Lead cross‑faculty programmes covering community development, human capital, digital futures, infrastructure, financial systems and sustainable urban development.
- Engage government, industry and civil‑society partners to co‑design research that informs policy and service delivery.
- Secure competitive funding from national, international and development agencies and build diverse partnership streams.
- Supervise postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, fostering capacity development and mentorship.
Required profile
- Qualified at the level of Associate Professor or Professor with a strong record of interdisciplinary research.
- Demonstrated ability to attract external research funding and manage large collaborative projects.
- Experience in supervising graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
- Proven track record of publishing in high‑impact journals and contributing to policy‑relevant research.
