Professional Nurse - Surgical

About the role

The Professional Nurse – Surgical works within a multi‑professional team at Mediclinic Hermanus to deliver safe, comprehensive, and high‑quality nursing care in line with Scope of Practice regulations. The role involves leading and coordinating nursing staff to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver quality nursing care in collaboration with a multi‑professional team.
• Identify, prevent, and manage risks to ensure patient safety.
• Facilitate a positive client experience by creating a conducive environment.
• Provide accurate and comprehensive records of all nursing interventions.
• Create a learning environment that builds staff competence.
• Ensure that all utilised stock and equipment are accurately charted.

Required profile

• Diploma leading to registration as a General Nurse, or a 4‑year Nursing Diploma/Bachelor of Nursing (essential qualification).
• Postgraduate Advanced Diploma in Midwifery or Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (e.g., Critical Care, Emergency Care, Peri‑operative Nursing) for specialist units (desired).
• No prior experience required (essential).

Required skills

• Basic life support training (ACLS, ATLS, PALS) for specialised wards.
• Computer literacy – Microsoft Office.
• Development and modification of nursing care plans.
• Infection prevention and control.
• Knowledge of nursing processes and procedures.
• Nursing record keeping.
• Patient assessment skills.
• Pharmacology knowledge.
• Understanding of relevant nursing legislation.
• Risk identification.
• Application of scientific nursing principles and processes.
