Medical Officer (Doctor) – Locum Fixed-Term

About the role

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is seeking two locum Medical Officers on a fixed‑term basis to provide clinical management for participants in ongoing clinical trials. The role is based at the institute’s research centre in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.

Key responsibilities

• Screen, enrol and clinically assess trial participants in line with study protocols and ethical guidelines.
• Review vitals, laboratory results and manage opportunistic infections, prescribing appropriate interventions.
• Coordinate emergency referrals, specialist transfers and maintain referral system documentation.
• Monitor adverse events, ensure timely follow‑up and report according to GCP standards.
• Capture patient data accurately on Case Report Forms (CRFs) and maintain source documentation.
• Supervise junior staff, conduct performance assessments and provide training on clinical trial procedures.
• Engage with sponsors and monitors, attend required meetings and ensure compliance with HPCSA and Wits RHI standards.

Required profile

• Medical doctor registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
• Experience in clinical trial conduct, patient recruitment and management.
• Familiarity with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for research.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary research environment.
