Head of Clinical Unit – Internal Medicine

About the role

We are seeking a senior medical specialist to lead the Internal Medicine Unit at Madadeni Provincial Hospital. The successful candidate will oversee clinical services, manage resources and drive strategic development across the department.

Key responsibilities

• Render efficient, cost‑effective internal medicine services to patients at Madadeni Hospital and its drainage sites.
• Strengthen clinical governance and ensure rational use of resources, including labs, medication, consumables and equipment.
• Plan and deliver training for nurses, clinical support staff, medical officers, interns and medical students.
• Support clinical research, trials and CPD activities, and develop regional internal‑medicine services.
• Provide expert clinical advice, run outpatient specialist clinics and ensure 24‑hour service availability.
• Lead the department with strategic vision, manage performance, and ensure health‑and‑safety compliance.
• Formulate and manage protocols, compile expenditure frameworks and implement fiscal controls.
• Maintain quality standards, generate reports and presentations, and strengthen partnerships with tertiary hospitals and community stakeholders.

Required profile

• MBCHB qualification and current HPCSA registration as a Specialist in Internal Medicine.
• Minimum five years post‑registration experience as an Internal Medicine specialist.
• Knowledge of specialist procedures, legislative prescripts, HR and financial management.
• Experience in budget control, project and change management.
• Strategic capability, leadership and problem‑solving skills.
• Awareness of cross‑cultural differences and strong interpersonal skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Report writing and presentation preparation.

What we offer

• Salary range from ZAR 2,168,145 to ZAR 2,592,273 per annum, comprising a 70% basic salary and a 30% flexible component.
• Additional benefits include an 18% housing allowance of basic salary and fixed commuted overtime.
