Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions – Level 14

About the role

The National Prosecuting Authority is seeking experienced legal professionals to serve as Deputy Directors of Public Prosecutions in Johannesburg and Pietermaritzburg. This senior position (Level 14) involves leading high‑profile criminal and civil litigation and providing strategic legal oversight.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of complex cases, including high‑court, appellate, and constitutional matters.
• Lead, train and mentor advocates, prosecutors and other legal staff.
• Conduct investigations, draft chargesheets and indictments, and represent the NPA in court.
• Coordinate with stakeholders such as SARS and other criminal‑justice partners.
• Develop strategic plans for the division and oversee performance management of staff.

Required profile

• LLB qualification; admission as attorney/advocate is an advantage.
• Minimum ten (10) years post‑qualification experience in civil and/or criminal litigation.
• Right of appearance under section 25(2) of the NPA Act.
• Demonstrated ability to act independently, professionally and with credibility.
• Strong advocacy, legal drafting and analytical skills.

Required skills

• Legal qualification (LLB).
• Knowledge of SARS functions and financial accounting principles.
• Proficiency with standard computer applications.
• Valid driver’s licence where applicable.
