Commis Chef – Hotel Kitchen

About the role

We are looking for a motivated Commis Chef to join the kitchen team at a leading hotel in Midrand. The role involves preparing a variety of hot and cold dishes, maintaining food quality standards, and supporting the culinary team during busy periods.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare special meals and substitute items according to recipes.
• Regulate temperatures of ovens, broilers, grills and roasters.
• Thaw frozen items in refrigeration and ensure proper portioning and garnish.
• Maintain food logs and monitor quality and quantity of prepared dishes.
• Communicate assistance needs and inform the Chef of excess items for daily specials.
• Notify service staff of menu specials and out‑of‑stock items.
• Prepare and cook foods following quality, presentation and safety standards, including cold food preparation.
• Assist management with hiring, training, scheduling and employee coaching.
• Follow all safety, security and company policies, report incidents and maintain a clean work environment.

Required profile

• Ability to stand, sit or walk for extended periods and perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 25 lb.
• Willingness to work in a fast‑paced kitchen and follow detailed recipes and procedures.
• Professional appearance, confidentiality and a commitment to teamwork.
