Backend Developer – Digital Payments

About the role

We are seeking a Backend Developer with strong ownership and delivery discipline to build and sustain high‑performance, scalable, and secure services for mission‑critical payment platforms. The role focuses on Java‑based microservices and cloud‑native development on AWS, supporting a fast‑paced, highly regulated fintech environment.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement backend changes for tokenisation, including enrolment flows and operational processes.
• Develop and integrate CyberSource (CYBS) components into the M‑Pesa payment stack.
• Build backend support for push‑provisioning app enhancements, covering secure token storage and notification services.
• Create and maintain logging, monitoring, and alerting infrastructure for initiative‑specific services.
• Execute functional testing, regression suites, and performance benchmarking, and remediate defects within agreed SLAs.
• Collaborate on end‑to‑end integration design and expose well‑documented APIs.
• Co‑author technical runbooks, system design documentation, and onboarding guides for client engineering teams.

Required profile

• 6+ years of backend development experience, with at least 4 years in payments, fintech, or financial services.
• Proven ability to design scalable, resilient architectures and mentor junior engineers.
• Experience leading code reviews and delivering high‑quality code in regulated environments.

Required skills

• Java (primary language) and familiarity with Python, Go, or Node.js.
• Amazon Web Services (AWS) for cloud‑native development.
• RESTful API design and consumption.
• Relational and NoSQL databases with SQL querying.
• Security best practices for payment systems (PCI‑DSS awareness, secure coding).
• Logging, monitoring, and observability tooling.
