Academic Director (Mathematical Sciences)

About the role

The Academic Director (Mathematical Sciences) provides senior academic leadership for AIMS South Africa’s graduate mathematics programme. The role combines strategic curriculum oversight, research engagement and operational management within a highly collaborative, residential environment.

Key responsibilities

• Academic leadership and curriculum management, including oversight of lecturers, teaching assistants and day‑to‑day scheduling of the Mathematical Sciences programme.
• Research leadership, supervising student projects, fostering a vibrant research culture and initiating workshops and thematic activities.
• Developing and maintaining national and international partnerships, supporting fundraising proposals and exchange programmes.
• Contributing to the centre’s operational planning, budgeting and ensuring a positive residential learning environment.

Required profile

• PhD in the mathematical sciences.
• Extensive teaching experience at graduate/post‑graduate level.
• Active, credible research record.
• Proven ability to lead, mentor and inspire a diverse academic community.
• Experience at the level of Associate Professor or equivalent is a strong asset.
