2-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

About the role

The BIOGRIP Node for Soil and Water, hosted by the Central Analytical Facility at Stellenbosch University, is offering a two‑year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. The fellow will be responsible for establishing and operating a gamma spectrometer to analyse radionuclides in the Onrus wetland, contributing to the node’s research on soil and water quality.

Key responsibilities

• Set up, calibrate and maintain a gamma spectrometer for high‑precision measurement of radionuclides.
• Conduct systematic sampling and analytical campaigns in the Onrus wetland to generate data for environmental radioactivity studies.
• Prepare detailed technical reports and present findings to the research team.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary colleagues to integrate spectrometric data into broader soil‑water investigations.

Required profile

• Holds a recent PhD or equivalent research experience in environmental science, geochemistry or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience with gamma spectrometry or other radiometric techniques.

Required skills

• Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting gamma spectrometers.
• Ability to perform quantitative radionuclide analysis and interpret results in an environmental context.
