Transmission Substation Engineer

About the role

Arup is seeking a Transmission Substation Engineer to join its Energy Transmission team in South Africa. The role involves delivering high‑voltage (up to 765 kV) transmission projects across power, rail, nuclear, and utility sectors, supporting clients in solar, wind, interconnectors, data centres and industrial facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deliver EHV/HV substations (765 kV‑132 kV) and associated primary/secondary plant.
• Perform network analysis for both AIS and GIS substations.
• Lead technical aspects of projects, coordinating with clients and internal teams.
• Conduct lightning protection studies and ensure compliance with relevant standards.

Required profile

• BSc or BEng in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is preferred.
• Experience in substation design, delivery, and project management.

Required skills

• Design and delivery of EHV/HV substations (765 kV‑132 kV).
• Analysis of AIS and GIS networks.
• Proficiency with substation design software such as CDEGS.
• Ability to conduct lightning protection studies.
