Senior Lecturer – Medical Biochemistry

About the role

The Senior Lecturer will join the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine to develop and deliver the integrated, spiral medical curriculum with a focus on medical biochemistry for the MBChB programme. The role combines excellence in teaching, research, curriculum development and academic leadership to support the School’s mission.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in medical biochemistry, including lectures, practicals, large‑ and small‑group sessions and assessments.
• Contribute to the design, review and continuous improvement of the MBChB curriculum, ensuring alignment with HPCSA standards and international best practice.
• Conduct discipline‑relevant research, publish in accredited journals and present at conferences.
• Supervise Master’s and Doctoral students and provide mentorship to MBChB learners.
• Participate in faculty and university committees and engage with professional organisations.
• Support ad‑hoc tasks required for the operationalisation of the new medical school.

Required profile

• PhD in Human/Medical Biochemistry (NQF level 10).
• Master’s degree in Human Biochemistry, Medical Biochemistry or Molecular Biology (NQF level 9).
• Minimum three years of independent module teaching and assessment experience in higher education.
• Peer‑reviewed research publications.
• Post‑graduate qualification in Medical Education or Health Sciences Education (advantage).
• Membership of relevant biochemistry societies and experience supervising postgraduate research.
