Professor/Associate Professor – Trilateral Research Chair in Transformative Innovation

About the role

The University of Johannesburg seeks a Professor or Associate Professor to hold the CBE Trilateral Research Chair in Transformative Innovation, focusing on the 4th Industrial Revolution and Sustainable Development. This three‑year fixed‑term position is based at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus and forms part of a strategic international research hub.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate research programmes on transformative innovation and sustainable development across African and global contexts.
• Collaborate with partner institutions including the University of Sussex (UK) and the African Centre for Technology Studies (Kenya), as well as a broader network of international research centres.
• Supervise postgraduate students and junior researchers, fostering interdisciplinary scholarship.
• Secure external research funding, manage grant‑related activities, and ensure compliance with university policies.
• Publish high‑impact research outputs and contribute to the university’s strategic goals of societal impact and sustainability.

Required profile

• PhD in Economics, International Relations, Development Studies, Political Science or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated record of scholarly excellence, including peer‑reviewed publications and successful grant acquisition.
• Experience working within international research collaborations and a strong commitment to African development issues.
