Professor – English Literature & Creative Writing

About the role

The University of Johannesburg is seeking a senior academic to lead teaching and research in English Literature and Creative Writing within the Faculty of Humanities. The professor will deliver undergraduate and postgraduate modules, supervise graduate research, and contribute to the department’s strategic goals.

Key responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in English Literary Studies and Creative Writing.
• Supervise postgraduate essays, dissertations, and theses.
• Conduct and publish peer‑reviewed research in international journals and reputable presses.
• Develop and implement curriculum and quality‑assurance processes aligned with the Higher Education Framework.
• Participate in departmental, faculty and university administration, including portfolio oversight.
• Mentor emerging and mid‑career academics and foster professional partnerships.

Required profile

• PhD or equivalent qualification in English Literature, Creative Writing or a related field.
• Demonstrated record of teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Strong publication record in accredited, peer‑reviewed outlets.
• Experience supervising graduate research projects.
• Ability to contribute to curriculum development and departmental governance.
