General Accountant – Financial Reporting & Contract Oversight

About the role

This position supports accurate financial records, robust contract oversight and disciplined asset management for a Schedule 3A national public entity. Reporting to the Cost & Management Accountant, the role combines financial reporting, cost accounting and non‑procurement contract monitoring.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports and schedules in accordance with GRAP and National Treasury frameworks.
• Assist with month‑end and year‑end closing, income reconciliations and variance analysis for senior finance leadership.
• Develop, maintain and refine costing models, allocate costs to cost centres and projects, and produce management reports on performance.
• Provide financial and compliance oversight of contracts (non‑procurement), ensuring accurate capture in the ERP system (Microsoft Dynamics 365), monitoring spend against budgets and flagging irregularities.
• Maintain the Fixed Asset Register, coordinate physical verification of assets and ensure timely recording of additions, disposals and transfers.

Required profile

• Proven experience in financial reporting, cost and management accounting, contract oversight and asset register maintenance within a public‑sector environment.
• Strong knowledge of PFMA, Treasury Regulations, National Treasury guidelines and GRAP reporting standards.
• Ability to analyse financial information, produce variance commentary and support budgeting and forecasting processes.

Required skills

• Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) ERP system.
• Advanced Excel for financial analysis and reporting.
