Financial Accountant

About the role

The Financial Accountant will support the finance team in Avoca, Durban by handling a broad range of accounting, reporting and secretarial duties. This role contributes to the preparation of statutory financial statements, assists with audits and ensures accurate tax compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with all accounting, finance and secretarial functions, including the annual audit and preparation of financial statements.
• Manage the Accounts Payable process for multiple entities, capturing invoices, reconciling and paying suppliers and transport creditors.
• Prepare monthly management accounts, board packs and support financial planning, budgeting and forecasting activities.
• Compute and remit company taxes such as VAT, income tax, dividends tax, carbon tax and royalty tax on a monthly and annual basis.
• Maintain fixed‑asset and property registers, perform general‑ledger and intercompany reconciliations, and act as a bank signatory.
• Oversee petty‑cash balances, lease agreements, insurance declarations and ongoing insurance claims.

Required profile

• Post‑graduate qualification in Finance; post‑article experience is a plus.
• 2–4 years of relevant accounting management experience.
• Strong knowledge of South African tax legislation (income tax, VAT, etc.) and accounting practices.
• High level computer literacy with proven ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and manage multiple projects.
• Demonstrated integrity, confidentiality and teamwork orientation.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in MS Office, particularly Excel (including macro development).
• Experience with JD Edwards (JDE) or similar online financial applications.
• Capability to build high‑level spreadsheets and perform financial modelling.
