Associate Professor/Professor & Head of School (5‑year term)

About the role

The University of the Free State’s Faculty of Health Sciences seeks an experienced academic leader to serve as Associate Professor/Professor (permanent) and Head of School for the School of Nursing (5‑year contract, renewable). The role combines scholarly excellence with strategic management of the school’s teaching, research, and community engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in Faculty of Health Sciences governance under the Dean.
• Lead the School of Nursing in research, scholarship, community engagement and transformation.
• Promote innovation in teaching and learning, including simulation and technology.
• Oversee curriculum development and compliance with SANC and CHE standards.
• Represent the school in national, regional and international nursing and health‑care forums.
• Manage day‑to‑day operations, financial resources and strategic planning.
• Identify and secure third‑stream income to support core functions.

Required profile

• PhD (NQF Level 10) in Nursing, qualified as Associate Professor.
• Professional registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Clinical Nurse and Midwife.
• Registered qualification in Nursing Education (SANC).
• Registered qualification in Nursing Administration/Management (SANC).
• Proven experience leading nursing teams.
• Minimum seven years of senior academic or managerial experience in nursing.
