Principal Medical Writer

About the role

The Principal Medical Writer will lead large medical communications projects and specific workstreams, ensuring scientific accuracy and high‑quality deliverables. Working remotely from South Africa with a UK‑based team, you will mentor colleagues and act as the primary scientific liaison for clients and experts.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and oversee complex medical writing projects, guaranteeing scientific integrity and alignment with client needs and industry guidelines.
• Serve as the main scientific contact for clients, building relationships and supporting new business opportunities.
• Provide strategic scientific input, manage budgets, and ensure timely, on‑budget delivery.
• Communicate proactively with internal teams, authors, faculty, and vendors.
• Identify and mitigate risks that could affect project timelines, scope, or quality.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of therapy areas, guidelines, and best practices.
• Motivate, coach, and develop the medical writing team, including performance reviews and career planning.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a Senior Medical Writer in a medical communications, healthcare agency, or pharmaceutical environment.
• Demonstrated ability to produce high‑quality scientific content and to mentor junior writers.
• Strong written communication and editorial skills.
• Experience managing budgets, timelines, and cross‑functional teams.
