Commercial Underwriter (2 positions)

About the role

We are seeking two Commercial Underwriters to join an insurance brokerage in Johannesburg. The role involves assessing commercial risks, determining coverage terms and ensuring compliance with company and regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities

• Assess risk and determine appropriate coverage terms under binder and insurer agreements.
• Evaluate new business and renewal applications for commercial insurance.
• Analyse risk exposures and set premiums, terms, and conditions.
• Liaise with stakeholders and internal teams to gather documentation and provide feedback.
• Ensure underwriting decisions align with policy, risk appetite, and regulatory standards.
• Maintain accurate underwriting records and monitor portfolio performance.
• Identify emerging risks and work with Claims and Finance teams to ensure policy accuracy.

Required profile

• 3–5 years experience in commercial underwriting within short‑term insurance.
• FAIS certification and FAIS‑compliant NQF qualification (minimum 120 credits).
• Fluent in Afrikaans and English.
• Residence in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg.
• Strong technical knowledge across multiple lines such as property, liability, motor, engineering.

Required skills

• Proficiency in MS Office.
• Experience with underwriting platforms such as Pursuit, Nimbis or similar.
