Senior Electronics Engineer: Electro-Optics Design and Development

About the role

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is seeking a Senior Electronics Engineer to lead the design and development of electro‑optical systems within its Optronic Sensor Systems Impact Area. Based in Pretoria, the role reports to the Research Group Leader and contributes to cutting‑edge defence and security technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop electro‑optical systems and subsystems.
• Conduct research and development of new electro‑optical technologies.
• Capture user requirements and produce URS, ICD and related documentation.
• Build concept demonstrators using platforms such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Nvidia Jetson, STMicroelectronics and PIC.
• Perform trade‑off studies for products or systems as required.
• Guide and mentor engineers in electro‑optics engineering.
• Prepare PCB manufacturing data packs and source components.
• Assemble, integrate and test electro‑optical systems and subsystems.
• Write acceptance test procedures and conduct system testing and field evaluations with customers and suppliers.
• Analyse test results, present outcomes and recommendations, and document research findings.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in electronic, mechatronics, electrical engineering or a related field.
• At least five years of experience in electronic circuit design, embedded software development and control system design.
• Honours degree in physics, mathematics or a related discipline (as mentioned).
