Academic Position in Veterinary Epidemiology (Lecturer to Professor)

About the role

The University of Pretoria invites applications for a senior academic position in the Department of Production Animal Studies, covering the ranks of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor in Veterinary Epidemiology. The role combines teaching, research and community service within a leading South African university.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in veterinary epidemiology and related subjects.
• Provide experiential training and supervise student projects.
• Develop, present and review course materials, including lectures, seminars and tutorials.
• Assess student performance, offer academic support and contribute to curriculum improvement.
• Participate actively in departmental research programmes and initiate new research projects.
• Engage with developing communities through service and continuing‑education programmes.
• Perform administrative and management duties as assigned by the Head of Department.

Required profile

• BVSc or equivalent veterinary qualification.
• Registration (or eligibility) with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinarian.
• For Lecturer: enrolment in an MSc or MMedVet programme, or commitment to obtain a master's degree within three years.
• For Senior Lecturer: a Master's degree in epidemiology or related field, five or more peer‑reviewed publications, and registration as a specialist or commitment to a PhD within three years.
• For Associate Professor: a PhD, significant national professional recognition, at least ten research‑based publications, and a proven record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
