Resident Engineer – Construction and Pavements

About the role

The Resident Engineer will act as the on‑site representative for a SANRAL Community Development Contract, ensuring that construction works are delivered to the required quality, schedule and budget. Reporting to the Section Manager and Contract Engineer, you will coordinate between designers, contractors and clients while maintaining SMEC’s quality management standards.

Key responsibilities

• Administer the contract and serve as the Resident Engineer for the SANRAL project.
• Review construction drawings and manage contractor queries through proper communication channels.
• Inspect works, review test results and enforce quality‑control procedures.
• Prepare and update cost estimates to completion.
• Maintain site administration records in line with SMEC’s Quality Management System.
• Take minutes at technical and site meetings and produce monthly progress reports.
• Liaise with clients and contractors, manage site supervision resources, and monitor programme and budget performance.
• Handle claims and contractual issues.

Required profile

• BSc/B.Ing/BTech (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering.
• Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
• Minimum 10 years of experience in road and construction projects, including at least 5 years as a Resident Engineer.
• Extensive knowledge of major conditions of contract and contractual management.
• Fluent in spoken and written English.
• Based in Griekwastad (or willing to work on‑site in Kimberley).
