Chief Flight Instructor (FW) – Aviation Training

About the role

Starlite Aviation Training Academy is seeking a safety‑focused, technically proficient Chief Flight Instructor (FW) to lead its flight training programmes in Durban, South Africa. Reporting to the Deputy Head of Training, you will oversee the delivery of SACAA‑approved and international flying, simulator and ground theory courses, ensuring the highest standards of safety and training excellence.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure standardised flight techniques and discipline in line with the Training Programme Manual (TPM).
• Conduct competency checks, mentor and develop Grade II and Grade III instructors.
• Maintain up‑to‑date instructor training files, documentation and debrief reports.
• Induct new flight staff and students, perform dual checks and monitor student progress.
• Coordinate monthly reports with contract sponsors and manage contract‑related documentation.
• Guarantee compliance with SACAA regulations, CATS, CARs, AICs, AIPs and NOTAMs, and prepare for CAA audits.
• Investigate operational irregularities and collaborate with the Head of Training and Quality & Safety Manager.
• Optimise daily and monthly flight programmes for efficient aircraft and instructor utilisation.
• Promote a non‑punitive safety culture across the academy.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years experience in training management as a Certified Flight Instructor.
• Background in military flying training.
• Experience as a Human Factors Instructor and Flight Safety Officer.
• Proven knowledge of Safety Management Systems (SMS) and course design.
• Current familiarity with aviation law, red‑tag procedures and regulatory publications.
