About the role
The Chief Flight Instructor (FW) leads the delivery of SACAA‑approved and international flight training programmes at Starlite Aviation Training Academy in Durban. The role integrates flying, simulator and ground theory training, ensures compliance with aviation regulations and promotes a culture of safety and training excellence.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain standardized techniques and discipline among flight personnel in line with the Training Programme Manual (TPM).
- Perform competency checks on all instructors and drive their continuous development.
- Oversee Grade II and Grade III instructors, including theoretical lecturing responsibilities.
- Ensure instructor training files, documentation, reports and debriefs are current and complete.
- Conduct thorough induction and orientation for new flight staff and students.
- Carry out student dual checks as defined in the TPM.
- Prepare month‑end reports for contract sponsors and hold regular check‑ins with civilian and contract students.
- Maintain a professional image when interacting with clients and external service providers.
- Ensure all systems, aircraft equipment and processes meet CAA audit requirements.
- Investigate operational irregularities (incidents/accidents) in collaboration with the Head of Training and Quality & Safety Manager.
- Manage daily and monthly flight programmes to maximise aircraft and instructor utilisation and support student progression.
- Promote a non‑punitive just safety culture across the organisation.
- Perform all flying and ground instruction duties in accordance with the TPM and SACAA policies.
Required profile
- Minimum 3 years of training management experience as a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI).
- Military flying training background.
- Human factors instruction experience.
- Experience as a Flight Safety Officer or with Safety Management Systems (SMS).
- Proven experience in course design and curriculum development.
